There is no question that Italians have a passion for good cooking. When you start with incredible ingredients - aged cheeses, cured meats, balsamic vinegar - it's much easier to make simple dishes taste sublime. The ingredients and techniques vary by region but they share common elements. We'll make dishes that are representative of the country as a whole using authentic ingredients and tried-and-true preparations.

This month, we are happy to announce our own member, We are proud to have Gene McAllister as our Guest Speaker. President & CEO of Investigative Screening Solutions, 800-605-4461, issbackgrounds.com Gene plans to have a very nice presentation on employment background screening. The importance of doing background checks, and the laws and procedures that need to be followed. Gene states:
"I founded my company in 2013 after a 26 year career in police work where I retired as a detective sergeant. During my career I was involved in countless criminal investigations including covert organized crime investigations as well as being assigned to the FBI task force investigating the 9-11 World Trade Center Bombings. Upon retirement I opened my agency originally as a private investigations firm but then started getting many calls to do background checks for employment purposes. I quickly realized that there was a huge market for background screening so I closed my doors, got trained and certified in the Fair Credit Reporting Act (the law that governs background screening) and reopened as Investigative Screening Solutions where my many years of law enforcement gives me expert knowledge with analyzing the confusing maze of criminal and motor vehicle records. Today I use that knowledge to help my clients decipher any criminal records that their employees might have.
We are looking forward to another successful Meetup! If you own a small business, please register and RSVP go to: www.meetup.com/small-biz-networking . Feel free to contact Julie Parker at juliep54@hotmail.com. We welcome you and your colleagues!. ...Show Less

The LGBT Library at Bradbury-Sullivan LGBT Community Center invites participation in our January Community Book Discussion featuring Black Dove: Mamá, Show More...Mi'jo, and Me by Ana Castillo. Black Dove was the 2017 finalist for the Lambda Literary Award for bisexual non-fiction and the text looks at what it means to be a single, brown, feminist parent in a world of mass incarceration, racial profiling, and police brutality. Through startling humor and love, Castillo weaves intergenerational stories traveling from Mexico City to Chicago. And in doing so, she narrates some of America's most heated political debates and urgent social injustices through the oft-neglected lens of motherhood and family. NBC News calls it an "exquisite memoir [...] full of compassion and maternal love."

Frank Hyder, who splits his time between Philadelphia and Miami, has become known for working across a variety of media. His paintings and sculpture have Show More...been widely exhibited in venues such as the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art's Museum of American Art, the Carnegie Museum in California, the La Salle Museum of Art in Philadelphia, and the National Museum of Catholic Art and History in New York among others. Hyder has also created several public art works, including three murals through the City of Philadelphia's Mural Arts Program: Hanging Garden of I-95, Honey's Garden, and Bell's Pond.
Hyder's fascination with the public sphere has manifested in a multimedia experience titled The Janis Project. Begun in 2015 and still continuing today, Hyder has created over a dozen large-scale, double-faced inflatable sculptures of heads. Hyder states of The Janis Project that each head, "which at once references Moai of Easter Island, Olmec heads and, the ancient Roman god of new endeavors, at the same time has its roots in street art and inflatable toys...Janis carries a message of equality and good will and dares to step out of the normal world of Art museums or Art Galleries to be among us.
